This is the exact checklist I use on every technical SEO audit — built over 10 years and 100+ campaigns for US, UK, and Canadian clients. It covers everything from basic crawlability to AI Overview readiness — a section no other public checklist includes in 2026. Below is a preview of the first 3 sections. 1Crawlability & Indexation (20 checks)
robots.txt is accessible and not blocking critical pages Critical
Check: yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Verify CSS, JS, and key page directories are not disallowed. Common mistake: blocking /wp-content/ prevents Google rendering your pages.
XML sitemap exists, is valid, and submitted to GSC Critical
Sitemap must only include indexable URLs (no noindex pages). Check for sitemap errors in Google Search Console → Sitemaps.
No critical pages accidentally set to noindex Critical
Check meta robots tag and X-Robots-Tag header on homepage, key landing pages, and product/category pages. Screaming Frog: filter by "noindex" to catch all instances.
Canonicals are implemented correctly on all paginated pages High
Page 2, 3 etc. should NOT self-canonicalize to page 1. Each paginated page should have a self-referential canonical. Common mistake causes Google to drop all paginated content.
No orphaned pages in sitemap High
Every URL in your sitemap should have at least one internal link pointing to it. Orphaned pages receive minimal crawl budget and no internal PageRank.

2Core Web Vitals & Page Speed (18 checks)
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds Critical
Check: PageSpeed Insights → Core Web Vitals. LCP above 2.5s directly impacts Google's ranking signal. Most common causes: unoptimised hero images, render-blocking resources, slow server TTFB.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) below 0.1 Critical
CLS above 0.1 is a confirmed ranking penalty signal. Check for images without explicit width/height, dynamically injected content, and web fonts causing FOUT/FOIT.
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) below 200ms High
INP replaced FID in March 2024. Measures responsiveness to all user interactions. High INP typically caused by heavy JavaScript execution. Check: CrUX data in GSC Experience report.
Time to First Byte (TTFB) under 600ms High
Poor hosting or uncached pages commonly cause high TTFB. UK/US sites should target under 400ms for optimal performance. Enable server-side caching as first fix.

Google AI Overviews pull content from pages that answer the query immediately — not after extensive preamble. Restructure content so the answer leads, with supporting detail following.
Author E-E-A-T signals present on key pages High
Author byline, credentials, linked social profiles, and "About the Author" sections signal real expertise. Google's AI systems evaluate E-E-A-T as a quality signal for AI Overview inclusion.
FAQ schema implemented on appropriate pages Medium
FAQ schema helps AI systems understand your content as a direct answer source. Implement on comparison pages, how-to guides, and product FAQs. Test with Google's Rich Results Test.

How to Use This Checklist Effectively
The full checklist is structured as a Google Sheet with 8 sections, each item colour-coded by priority: Critical (fix this week), High (fix this month), Medium (schedule for next sprint). Every item includes a "how to check" description and a "how to fix" guidance note.
My recommended approach: run a Screaming Frog crawl first to export your site data, then work through the checklist section by section using the crawl data as your input. A typical technical audit of a 500-page site using this checklist takes 2–3 hours and produces a prioritised fix list that you can present directly to a client or developer.
The AI Overviews section is unique to this checklist. Most publicly available technical SEO checklists were written before Google's AI Overviews rollout in 2024. The 12 checks in that section specifically address how to structure content for AI Overview inclusion — a ranking factor that now affects over 60% of US and UK search queries.
